What is PhotoGuessr?

PhotoGuessr is a family game for iPhone and iPad that sends you back through your own photos. A photo from your library is shown to everyone, each player secretly drops a pin on a map to guess where it was taken, and then you reveal the answer together.

How do we play?

Pass one iPhone or iPad around the couch. Everyone sees the photo and the question “Where was this taken?”. Each player in turn places a pin on the map in secret. When everyone has locked in, the family reveals the answer together: every pin on the map with distance and points, the round winner, and the place name and date of the photo. You can play with 1 to 8 players and 5, 10 or 15 rounds.

Why are only some of my photos used?

PhotoGuessr only uses photos that have a location. If many of your photos are missing, check that Location is turned on for the Camera (Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera) so that future photos are tagged. Photos you have hidden are never shown. You can also limit the game to certain years and albums, so check those filters if the pool looks small.

Some photos don't load. What can I do?

If your photos are stored in iCloud Photos, a photo may need to be downloaded before it can be shown, so you need an internet connection for photos that are stored only in iCloud. Give it a moment on a slow connection, or open the photo in the Photos app first to download it.

Can we play on the TV?

Yes. Mirror your iPhone or iPad to a TV with AirPlay so everyone can see the photo and the reveal. Pins are still placed on the device, one player at a time.

How does scoring work?

The closer your pin, the more points you get, up to 5,000 per round. The scale adapts to how spread out your photos are, so a library of photos from a single city still rewards picking the right neighbourhood. If you switch on the optional year guess, you can earn up to 1,000 extra points per round for guessing the year.

What happens when time runs out?

If you've placed a pin, it is locked in as it is. If there is no pin when the countdown ends, you score 0 points for that round. The countdown is set per player (Off, 30, 60 or 90 seconds) when you start a game.

Is it really free?

Yes. PhotoGuessr is free, with no ads, no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no accounts.

Do my photos leave my device?

No. Photos are read on your device and are never uploaded or copied anywhere. When an answer is revealed, the photo's coordinate (not the photo) is sent to Apple Maps to look up the place name. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Where is my game history saved?

On your device. Player names, the family roster with wins and recent games are stored locally. PhotoGuessr has no accounts and doesn't collect any data. Deleting the app deletes its local data, subject to your iOS and iCloud backup settings.

Which devices are supported?

PhotoGuessr is made for iPhone and iPad.

How do I report a bug?
